NEWS RELEASE
MUSICA MAXIMA begins early in the fall this season; Sunday, September 12, 2010, 3 pm, while the leaves are still green, in Beloit’s beautiful First Congregational Church with a performance by the concert duo, MUSICEREND GEZELSCHAP (Music Party). Sonia Lee, harpsichord, and Hyunjung Choi, baroque violin, up from Urbana-Champaign, Illinois, will offer a program of colorful music from the baroque period in Italy and France. Ms Lee, founder of MUS GEZ in 2005, performs frequently in North and South America, Europe and the Far East. A top-prize winner at the 2007 Montréal Baroque Galaxie-CBC Rising Star Competition and the 2007 Mae & Irving Jurow International Harpsichord Competition, she has taught music history at Illinois Wesleyan University and directed the Collegium Musicum at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. An international presenter of lectures and master classes, she serves on the Board of Directors and as the Newsletter Editor of the Midwestern Historical Keyboard Society. Ms Choi has concertized as baroque violinist in the US, Canada, South Korea, China, Italy and Finland; she is a frequent soloist with Concerto Urbano, and since 2005 has played modern violin with Sinfonia da camera in Urbana-Champaign. She is a doctoral candidate in violin performance at the University of Illinois.
Later concerts feature artists familiar to MUSICA MAXIMA audiences. Max Yount, as he did last season, will offer one organ concert and one harpsichord concert as benefits for the series. The organ concert on Sunday, December 12, 2010, 3 pm, will be organized around nos. 2 and 3 of César Franck’s famous Chorals for organ. Seasonal music will include J. S. Bach’s Pastorale and Messiaen’s “Les Bergers”; for arrangements of seasonal hymns and carols, Dr. Susan Behrens, piano, will serve as duet partner. At the harpsichord concert on Sunday, March 13, 2011, 3 pm, Mr. Yount will play preludes and fugues from Well-Tempered Clavier, volume II (C, E, f#, G, g, D, B and b). Dr. Beth j. Yount, harpsichord/organ, will serve as duet partner in Antonio Soler’s Concertos no. 2 and 3 for two keyboard instruments.
e e consort has gained another e—Eric miller, viola da gamba, who will join Edith Hines, baroque violin, and Eleanor Cox, baroque cello, in a concert of trios sonatas by Buxtehude, Biblical Sonatas by Biber, and other fascinating music. Max Yount will accompany on the organ and the harpsichord.
On Sunday, May 1, 2011, 3 pm, David Newman, piano, will make his annual appearance in the series. David is wonderful; he never disappoints us.
All are invited to the concerts; admission is free, but a freewill offering is taken so that you can contribute to the expenses of the concert series. Please help spread the word that good music can be heard at First Congregational Church, 801 Bushnell, Beloit WI 53511.
